 Poloniasandigo.com is the first of several Web sites oriented to the Polish/Polish American community in the State of California. It is privately developed and maintained, and grew out of the need to facilitate the identification of the pockets and composition of “Polonia” in the San Diego area. This followed similar difficulties experienced in Orange County and Los Angeles County. The purpose of this site is to service and inform Polonians themselves, tourists/visitors, other interested parties, and to provide an awareness of other groups within Polonia and the plethora of information available through them.
Much of Polonia in California follows the same patterns of development that ocurred in Eastern and Central United States. The early arrivals came as adventurers, gold seekers and soldiers of fortune. These were followed by the emigrés from the various insurrections and repressions that dot the pages of Polish and Polish American history, followed by the great immigration driven by economic necessity. Most recently of course were those driven from their homeland by successive World Wars and communist domination.
To facilitate easy access, the San Diego site starts with the well-known term Polonia and is followed by the locality which should facilitate standardized searches on the “net.” Hence it obviates the need to use or identify keyword searches for “clubs,” “societies,” “groups,” or organizations in the hope of ferreting out the Polish organizations we may be seeking.
